Soil pH is one of the most important measurements a home gardener can understand, because it shapes how well plants grow in a given spot. It is a simple number that tells you whether your soil is acidic, neutral, or alkaline, and it quietly influences nearly everything happening in the root zone. Learning to read it helps you match plants to your yard and troubleshoot problems before they get worse.

What it is

Soil pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral, numbers below 7 are acidic, and numbers above 7 are alkaline. Most common garden vegetables, lawns, and ornamentals do best in soil that is slightly acidic to near neutral, while some plants such as blueberries and azaleas prefer more acidic conditions. The pH level strongly affects nutrient availability, because many nutrients are easiest for roots to take up within a moderate range and become locked up or harder to reach when soil is too acidic or too alkaline. The scale is logarithmic, so each whole number represents a tenfold change, which means even a small shift in the number reflects a large change in the soil.

What to do

The most reliable way to learn your soil pH is to collect a representative sample and send it to your local Cooperative Extension soil testing lab, which returns a clear reading along with guidance for your area. You can gather several small scoops from different parts of a bed, mix them together, and follow the lab's simple submission instructions. Home test kits and inexpensive meters can give you a rough idea between lab tests, though they are less precise. Because pH can vary from one part of the yard to another, it helps to test separate areas such as the vegetable garden, the lawn, and any beds with acid-loving plants on their own.

Tips

Retest every few years and keep notes, since pH tends to drift slowly over time and can differ by bed. If your test shows a level that does not suit what you want to grow, ask your local Cooperative Extension how to adjust it, because they can interpret your specific results and recommend the right approach and amounts for your soil and region. Rather than guessing at changes, let a soil test guide any adjustments so you avoid overcorrecting.
