Drainage describes how quickly water moves down through your soil after rain or irrigation. Poorly drained beds stay soggy, which crowds out the air that roots and soil life need, while well-drained soil holds enough moisture for plants without staying waterlogged. Most US home gardeners can improve drainage through simple observation and steady work on soil structure.
What it is
Good drainage depends on soil texture, structure, and the landscape around the bed. Heavy clay soils and compacted ground drain slowly because their tiny, tightly packed pores hold water, while sandy soils often drain very fast and dry out quickly. A hardpan layer, a high water table, or a low spot that collects runoff can also keep an area wet long after a rain. Signs of a drainage problem include standing water, a sour or musty smell, moss, yellowing lower leaves, and stunted or rotting roots.
What to do
You can gauge drainage with a simple percolation test: dig a hole about a foot deep, fill it with water, let it drain, then refill it and time how fast the level drops. To improve slow-draining ground, loosen compaction, work in generous amounts of finished compost or other organic matter to build crumbly structure, and avoid working or walking on wet soil. Raised beds and gentle grading that directs water away from planting areas are reliable fixes for spots that stay wet. For sandy soil that drains too fast, adding organic matter helps the ground hold moisture longer.
Tips
Add organic matter gradually over several seasons rather than all at once, and keep beds mulched to protect soil structure and reduce crusting. Choose plants suited to your site, since some tolerate wet feet and others demand sharp drainage.
