Peaty soil is a dark, spongy soil made up largely of partly decomposed plant material that has built up in wet, low-oxygen conditions. Home gardeners in cooler and low-lying parts of the United States sometimes encounter it, and it can be a productive growing medium once its moisture and acidity are managed. Knowing how to read and work with peaty ground helps you get the most out of it.

What it is

Peaty soil is high in organic matter and feels soft, dark brown to black, and often spongy or crumbly when handled. It holds a large amount of water and can stay soggy in wet seasons, yet a dried-out peat can become water-repellent and hard to re-wet. Because it forms in waterlogged, low-oxygen settings, it tends to be naturally acidic and can be low in some plant nutrients even though it looks rich. It also warms slowly in spring and may settle or shrink over time as the organic material continues to break down.

What to do

Improving peaty soil usually starts with managing water, since good drainage lets roots breathe and the ground warm up; raised beds and shaped planting mounds can help in areas that stay wet. Mixing in coarser mineral material and other bulky organic matter can add structure and reduce excessive sponginess. Because peat is often acidic, many gardeners adjust pH toward the range their chosen plants prefer, but do this based on a soil test rather than by guesswork. Keep the surface from drying out completely, as fully dried peat sheds water and is slow to rewet.

Have a soil test done before making major changes, and let your local Cooperative Extension office interpret the results and recommend any pH adjustment or nutrient rates for your specific site. Choose plants suited to moist, acid-tolerant conditions, or plan drainage improvements first if you want a wider range of crops. Watch for settling over the seasons and top up beds with organic matter as needed.
