Garden lime is a common soil amendment that US gardeners use to raise the pH of acidic soil, making it less sour and more suitable for many vegetables, lawns, and ornamentals. Because it changes the chemistry of the ground rather than feeding plants directly, it is best thought of as a soil conditioner rather than a fertilizer. What it is
Garden lime is a ground mineral product made mostly of calcium carbonate, and some forms also supply magnesium. When worked into acidic soil, it neutralizes acidity over time and gradually moves the pH toward a more neutral range. A more balanced pH can help make certain existing soil nutrients more available to plant roots and can improve the activity of soil organisms. Lime is not a quick fix, since it reacts slowly and its full effect can take several months to develop.
What to do
Start by having your soil tested so you know your current pH and whether liming is actually needed, because not every garden benefits and some plants prefer acidic ground. If a change is warranted, lime is usually spread evenly over the surface and mixed into the upper layer of soil, ideally in the fall so it has time to react before the growing season. Finely ground forms react faster than coarse ones, and thorough contact with the soil helps the material do its job. Water the area afterward and allow time before rechecking the pH, since results appear gradually rather than overnight.
Tips
Match your effort to the plants you are growing, since acid-loving plants such as blueberries and azaleas generally do not want lime at all.
