Propagation
Division is a simple propagation method that separates one mature plant into smaller sections with roots and shoots attached. It is commonly used for many perennials, grasses, and clump-forming plants.
How to do it
Dig the plant carefully and lift the root mass from the soil with as many roots intact as possible. Pull or cut the clump into smaller sections, making sure each division has healthy roots and growing points. Replant the divisions promptly at the same depth they were growing before and water them in well. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plants re-establish.
Timing
Division is often done when plants are not in full bloom and weather is relatively mild. Many perennials are divided in early spring or in late summer to fall, depending on when they flower. Give divisions enough time to root before periods of heat, drought, or hard freezing.
Tips
Divide overcrowded clumps when flowering or vigor declines. Replant promptly so roots do not dry out during the process. Discard dead or diseased portions instead of reusing them.
