Floating row cover is a lightweight fabric laid directly over crops or supported slightly above them. It provides a simple layer of protection from light frost, wind, and some insect pressure. Because it lets light, air, and water pass through, it is easy to use over broad areas.

How it works

The fabric traps a small layer of warmer air around the plants and reduces exposure to cold wind. That small temperature increase can help protect tender growth from light frost and reduce temperature swings. The cover also slows moisture loss from leaves and soil. Since it is breathable, it does not create as much heat buildup as solid plastic covers.

Best for

Floating row cover is useful for leafy greens, root crops, young transplants, and many spring or fall vegetables. It is especially helpful during short cold snaps or windy periods. It also suits gardeners who want quick protection without building a rigid structure.

How to use it

Lay the fabric loosely over the crop so plants can lift it as they grow, or support it with hoops for more headroom. Anchor the edges well with soil, boards, pins, or weights to keep wind from lifting it. Put it in place before a cold night rather than after frost begins. Remove or vent it when temperatures rise enough to stress cool-season crops or interfere with pollination needs.

Tips

Use enough slack so fast-growing plants are not flattened. Check after storms to make sure edges are still sealed. Dry the fabric before storage to reduce wear and mildew.
