Cover

A cloche is a small cover placed over an individual plant or a short section of row. It acts like a tiny greenhouse and gives focused protection where it is needed most. Gardeners often use cloches for early transplants or especially tender plants.

How it works

The cover traps heat from sunlight around the plant and reduces exposure to wind. This creates a slightly warmer, more stable microclimate than the surrounding air. Because the space is small, temperatures rise quickly during the day and can also drop quickly at night. Moisture can build up inside, so occasional venting is often necessary.

Best for

Cloches are good for protecting a few tomato, pepper, squash, melon, or herb transplants early in the season. They are also useful for sheltering plants during brief cold spells. Their small size makes them practical for spot protection rather than large plantings.

How to use it

Place the cloche over the plant after transplanting and press the edges into the soil or secure them so wind cannot dislodge it. Vent or remove the top during warm sunny periods to prevent overheating. Water the soil before covering if access will be limited afterward. Remove the cloche once weather moderates and the plant begins to outgrow the space.

Tips

Leave enough clearance so leaves do not press tightly against the cover. Check daily during bright weather because heat can build rapidly. Clean and store cloches carefully so they remain clear and effective.
