When and How to Fertilize Tomatoes
Fertilize tomatoes at planting only if a soil test or poor soil indicates a need, then side-dress lightly after the first fruit sets and again during continued fruit production if plants need it. Too much nitrogen causes lush foliage and can delay fruiting, so a soil test and restrained applications are more useful than frequent feeding.
Start with a soil test from a state Cooperative Extension laboratory or another reliable lab. The report identifies soil pH and nutrient levels and recommends amendments for vegetables in your area.
