How to Improve Sandy Soil

Improve sandy soil by adding finished compost regularly, keeping it covered with organic mulch, and watering more slowly and often enough to wet the root zone. Sandy soil drains rapidly and holds relatively little water or nutrients, so steady organic-matter additions are the most reliable long-term improvement.

Confirm that your soil is sandy before making major changes. Sandy soil feels gritty when rubbed between fingers, forms only a weak ball when moist, and drains quickly after rain. A laboratory soil test provides pH, nutrient levels, and organic-matter information that a feel test cannot.
