Drip irrigation delivers water slowly and directly to the root zone of your plants, which cuts down on waste and keeps foliage dry. For a home garden, it can mean healthier plants, fewer weeds, and a lot less time spent standing around with a hose.
A basic drip system is simpler than it looks. Water enters from a hose bib or spigot, passes through a backflow preventer and a pressure regulator, then runs into 1/2-inch mainline tubing that you route along your beds. From that mainline you branch off with smaller emitter tubing or punch in individual emitters right where each plant sits. Most home spigots put out more pressure than drip parts are designed for, so the pressure regulator is not optional if you want your fittings to stay put.
You will generally choose between two styles of tubing. Inline emitter tubing has drippers built in at set spacings, usually every 6, 12, or 18 inches, and it shines in rows of closely planted crops like lettuce, carrots, or a bed of onions. Point-source emitters, which you push into blank tubing one at a time, give you more control for spaced-out plants such as tomatoes, peppers, or shrubs. Many gardeners mix both on the same system, and that is perfectly fine.
Match the emitter output to how thirsty and how spread-out your plants are. A single tomato or pepper often does well with a couple of emitters near its base so the water spreads across the root zone rather than drilling one narrow wet spot. In sandy soil, water sinks fast and runs sideways very little, so closer emitter spacing helps; in clay, water spreads wider and moves down slowly, so you can space emitters farther apart and water for longer, gentler stretches.
When it comes to timing, think slow and deep rather than short and frequent. Drip works best running for a longer session that pushes moisture well down into the root zone, then letting the top of the soil dry a bit before the next cycle. Early morning is the ideal window because the soil takes up water before the heat of the day. An inexpensive battery timer at the spigot makes this consistent, but check it against reality by digging down a few inches after a run to see how far the water actually reached.
A little filtration goes a long way. Even municipal water carries grit that can clog the tiny emitter openings, so a simple screen filter at the head of the system saves you headaches later. Flush the lines once or twice a season by opening the far ends and letting water run through to clear out any sediment, and glance over the beds now and then for a plant that looks dry, which is often the first clue that an emitter has plugged.
Come freezing weather, drip components need to be protected. Drain the lines, bring the timer, filter, and pressure regulator indoors, and either roll up the tubing or leave the end caps open so trapped water has somewhere to go as it freezes. Doing this in fall means you unroll a working system in spring instead of shopping for cracked fittings.
