Utility Tractors
Utility tractors are larger, heavier machines used on working farms for field work, hay, loader chores, and transport. On US small farms, they are often chosen when compact tractors no longer have enough lift, traction, or PTO power for the operation.
What it does
These tractors power larger mowers, balers, spreaders, drills, discs, and heavier loader attachments. They are suited to haying, pasture renovation, heavier tillage, and handling pallets, bales, or bulk materials. Their extra weight and wheelbase improve traction and stability in demanding jobs. Many also serve as the main tractor for mixed livestock and crop operations.
How to choose one
Pick a utility tractor by working backward from your largest implement and highest power demand. Compare PTO horsepower, operating weight, hydraulic capacity, hitch lift capacity, transmission type, and whether you need cab comfort for long days. Check three-point hitch category, PTO compatibility, and loader or remote hydraulic requirements before buying. Used tractors can be very durable values, but only if drivetrain, hydraulics, and service records check out.
Cost, upkeep & safety
General costs run higher than compact tractors because of size, hydraulics, and implement capacity. Maintenance is more involved and may include larger tires, more fluids, and more expensive wear parts. Safety matters more as size increases, so read the manual, respect braking and towing limits, and ask the dealer about ballast, slopes, and road transport.
Tips
Do not oversize just for bragging rights, because bigger machines cost more to buy, fuel, and maintain. If you plan to hay, drill seed, or run hydraulic implements, verify remotes and PTO power early.
