Broadcast Spreaders
Broadcast spreaders distribute seed, fertilizer, lime, or similar materials across the soil surface. On US small farms and homesteads, they are common for pasture maintenance, lawn and field seeding, and general nutrient application.
What it does
These spreaders use a spinning disc or similar mechanism to scatter material over a swath. They are useful for overseeding, applying dry fertilizer, spreading pelletized products, and covering open ground quickly. Their main benefit is speed and simplicity. Accuracy depends on material flow, proper calibration, weather, and driving pattern.
How to choose one
Select a spreader based on capacity, material type, corrosion resistance, and the tractor or ATV setup you plan to use. For tractor-mounted units, confirm hitch compatibility, PTO or ground-drive arrangement, and whether the tractor can safely handle the loaded weight. Different materials spread differently, so buying a machine suited to your main use matters. Used spreaders should be checked for hopper rust, agitator wear, gearbox issues, and gate-control function.
Cost, upkeep & safety
General costs can be modest for simple units and higher for larger or more corrosion-resistant designs. Maintenance is important because fertilizer is hard on metal, so washing, drying, and lubricating after use extend life. Safety includes wearing appropriate protective gear, following product labels, and consulting the operator manual for setup and use.
Tips
Do a small calibration test before spreading a whole field. Avoid windy conditions, which reduce accuracy and can waste product. Clean the machine immediately after fertilizer use, even if it looks dry.
