Watering Containers
Method
Watering is one of the most important tasks in container gardening because pots dry out faster than garden beds. Heat, wind, plant size, and container material all affect how often water is needed.
How to do it
Check the potting mix often by feeling below the surface instead of watering on a fixed schedule. Water thoroughly so the entire root ball is moistened and excess water can drain from the bottom. Water early in the day when possible so plants are well supplied before afternoon heat. Adjust your routine as plants grow larger or weather becomes hotter and windier.
Best plants
Leafy greens and herbs often need even moisture to stay tender and productive in containers. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes and peppers also benefit from steady watering, which helps support uniform growth and reduces stress.
Tips
Very small containers may need attention more than once a day during hot weather. Mulch on the surface of the potting mix can help slow water loss. Avoid letting containers stay waterlogged, since roots need oxygen as well as moisture.
