Growing Salad Greens in Containers

Salad greens are well suited to containers because they grow quickly, need limited root space, and can be harvested young. They are especially useful for cool-season gardening in small spaces.

How to do it

Use shallow to medium-depth containers with drainage and fill them with a fine-textured potting mix. Sow seeds or set transplants with enough space for air movement and easy harvest. Keep the mix evenly moist so leaves stay tender and growth remains steady. Harvest outer leaves first or cut the planting lightly to allow regrowth when the variety supports it.

Best plants

Leaf lettuce, arugula, spinach, Asian greens, and mustard greens are strong container choices. Looseleaf types are especially practical because they can be harvested over time without pulling the whole plant.

Tips

Provide some afternoon shade during warm weather to slow bolting and help leaves stay mild. Succession planting can keep fresh greens coming over a longer period. Wash containers between plantings if you are reusing them for repeated crops.
