Growing Peppers in Containers

Peppers adapt well to containers because the plants stay relatively compact and tolerate warm growing conditions. With enough sunlight and steady care, they can produce well on patios, balconies, and decks.

How to do it

Choose a container with drainage that gives the plant enough room to develop a healthy root system. Use a well-drained potting mix and place the container in a sunny location. Water regularly so the mix does not swing from very dry to saturated. Support plants if fruit load or wind causes stems to lean or bend.

Best plants

Sweet peppers, jalapeno types, and many compact hot pepper varieties perform well in containers. Smaller-fruited varieties are often especially reliable because they place less strain on the plant and support system.

Tips

Warm weather generally favors pepper growth, but container roots can still be stressed by extreme heat. Avoid crowding plants so leaves dry well after watering and light reaches the canopy. Harvest peppers at the stage and color that fit the variety and your intended use.
