Growing Herbs in Containers
Crop
Herbs are among the easiest and most useful plants for container gardening. Many stay compact, grow quickly, and can be placed close to the kitchen for frequent harvest.
How to do it
Plant herbs in containers with good drainage and a light potting mix. Group herbs with similar light and moisture needs together so care is simpler. Harvest often by trimming stems or leaves, but avoid removing too much at one time from young plants. Place containers where they receive the light needed for the specific herb you are growing.
Best plants
Basil, parsley, chives, thyme, oregano, cilantro, mint, and rosemary are common herbs for containers. Mint is especially vigorous and is often best kept in its own pot so it does not crowd other plants.
Tips
Regular harvesting helps many herbs stay bushy and productive. Good air movement around containers can help reduce leaf problems. Move portable pots to the most suitable location as the season changes.
