Grow Bags
Method
Grow bags are lightweight fabric containers that work well for vegetables, herbs, and flowers in small spaces. Their porous sides allow air movement around the roots and help excess water drain away.
How to do it
Set grow bags on a level surface with good drainage and easy access to water. Fill them with a high-quality potting mix and choose a bag size that fits the mature crop. Water carefully and check moisture often, since fabric containers can dry faster than rigid pots in hot weather. Support taller crops if needed because the flexible sides do not provide structural support.
Best plants
Grow bags are useful for tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, bush beans, herbs, and salad greens. Compact varieties and crops with moderate root systems often adapt especially well.
Tips
Place trays or a suitable surface under grow bags if you want to manage drainage on patios or balconies. In very hot climates, lighter-colored bags or partial afternoon shade can help keep roots cooler. Empty, clean, and store dry bags when not in use to extend their life.
