Choosing Containers and Pots
Getting Started
The right container helps support healthy roots, steady moisture, and good plant growth. Size, drainage, and material all affect how well plants perform in a small-space garden.
How to do it
Choose containers with drainage holes so excess water can leave the pot. Pick a size based on the crop, with deeper and wider containers for larger vegetables and smaller pots for herbs or greens. Consider the material carefully, since plastic holds moisture longer while clay dries more quickly. Use sturdy containers that can support the plant at full size and remain stable in wind.
Best plants
Shallow-rooted crops such as lettuce, arugula, and many herbs can grow in smaller containers. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and dwarf eggplant need larger pots to support their root systems and top growth.
Tips
Dark containers can heat up quickly in full sun, which may stress roots during hot weather. Large containers usually need less frequent watering than small ones. Clean and inspect reused pots before planting to reduce carryover problems.
