Balcony and Patio Gardening
Getting Started
Balcony and patio gardens can provide fresh vegetables and herbs even when yard space is limited. Success depends on sunlight, container choice, watering access, and safe use of the space.
How to do it
Observe how many hours of sun the area receives and choose crops that fit those conditions. Use containers with drainage and place saucers or trays where needed to protect surfaces. Arrange pots so heavier containers are in stable locations and taller plants do not shade smaller ones. Plan for easy watering, since carrying water long distances can make routine care harder.
Best plants
Herbs, salad greens, peppers, bush beans, and compact tomatoes are strong choices for many balconies and patios. Shade-tolerant leafy crops are often better than fruiting crops in areas with limited direct sun.
Tips
Wind can be stronger on balconies than at ground level, so secure supports and protect tender plants when needed. Heat reflected from walls and pavement can dry containers quickly. Keep walkways clear and check building rules if weight or water runoff may be a concern.
